HOME OF TRINE KJÆR

Trine Kjær is a Danish style influencer and creative with a home that feels both personal and inspiring. Shared with her husband and three children, it reflects her love for mixing old and new, while leaving space for family life. LAYERED visited Trine’s home for a photoshoot, where she talked about creating a space with personality, the role of textures, and the inspiration she brings into her interior style.

“I love working with colours and textiles - they are a playful way to take risks in your decor and they are easy change or switch around.”

How do you create a home that feels both personal and inspiring?

First of all I believe that creating a home requires patience. I think a lot of people forget that ahome takes many years to come together. You need to live in it for a while before making changes—so you know exactly which spots work best for what.

A  home should reflect the people who live there. In our case, that means my husband, me, and our three children. We adults decide what goes into the home, but there must also be space for the children’s artwork, toys, and for them to play and express themselves.

A home will look personal if you fill it with items that means something to you. To me that’s often pieces I´ve found when traveling or old items that I’ve either inherited, thrifted or found at auctions. I love mixing them with more modern furniture; the contrast between old and new feels both homely and inspiring.

What does “layering” mean to you – in your home and your personal space?

For me, layering is what makes a home or an outfit look personal and interesting. In our house it’s about mixing textures and textiles and items from different periods in time. It creates a space that feels lived-in and personal.

When it comes my outfits it’s kind of the same - mixing different textures and adding some vintage accessories is what makes a look stand out.

Where do you find inspiration when curating or decorating your spaces?

I love printed magazines like House & Garden and World of Interiors. I also find a lot of inspiration on Instagram and Pinterest where I have several specific and kind of nerdy boards - like curtains, outdoor tiles, door handles. But most of all I find inspiration when traveling - especially to Italy - I could study  the level of details in their buildings and interior for years.

Which piece in your home tells the most special story?

It’s hard to choose just one, as most of our pieces have been collected over many years. If I had to pick one, it would probably be the display cabinet in our dining room. It’s several hundred years old and it’s where I keep my most precious porcelain - I’ve either collected myself or inherited from my grandmother, who was a collector just like me.

How do you think a rug can transform a room — and what do you look for when choosing one?

A rug instantly brings a sense of warmth and calm to a room. It makes a space feel fully decorated and it adds personality to a room through its texture and color.

Furthermore I think we really need rugs when living in Scandinavia where it’s cold half of the year. I love the feeling of bare feet on a cosy soft rug.

How do flowers play a role in creating atmosphere in your home?

Flowers and I are a love story. If I ever changed careers, I’d become a florist. I find so much peace in arranging flowers. I love how flowers bring life to a room and add colors in a discrete and nice way.

I always have fresh flowers in our home, and right now is my favourite season because I can pick them straight from the garden.
