BARLEY COLLECTION

LAYERED presents Barley, a handwoven collection in wool and jute that reimagines the character of a naturally tactile material. Softening jute's traditionally rustic expression, the collection brings warmth, texture and quiet refinement to the contemporary home.

The name Barley refers to the grain – a nod to the natural, golden tone of the jute threads that run through the rug. The color palette is built on muted earthy tones that reinforce the rustic impression. The collection is available in four earthy colorways.

Unlike sisal and seagrass, which can feel coarser underfoot, jute fiber is extracted from the stem of the jute plant, making it soft and supple and giving the rug a thick, full-bodied texture. As a natural fiber, jute grows quickly and almost entirely on rainfall, without artificial irrigation or chemical fertilizers.

Barley is made of 70% jute fibers and 30% natural wool. It is in the meeting of the two fibers that the rug finds its character: jute brings structure, and a cool, robust surface, while wool adds softness and warmth. Together they make Barley both hard-wearing and comfortable underfoot.

HOME STUDY: CONSIDERED THINGS

LAYERED visited Paul and Michelle in East London to photograph the new Barley collection, and to talk about layering, storytelling and creating spaces that feel genuinely lived-in.
