SIZE GUIDE FOR RUGS

In this guide, LAYERED’s stylists have gathered the foundational principles for choosing the right rug size — designed to give you a deeper understanding of how the room's space and existing furniture determine your choice of size.

Before diving into each room, here are three principles to keep in mind — no matter where the rug is going.

1. When in doubt, go bigger

A larger rug grounds the room and gives furniture something to belong to. If you're unsure between two sizes, the bigger one is almost always the better choice.

2. Let the rug breathe

The rug should feel like a considered part of the room — not compete with it. Leave some floor visible around the edges to keep the space open and balanced.

3. Keep furniture connected

At least the front legs of your furniture should rest on the rug. This ties the pieces together and creates a sense of intention in the arrangement.

LIVING ROOM

Start by letting the sofa set the scale — the rug should extend at least 20 cm beyond it on each side. If your seating floats in the room, bring all the furniture legs onto the rug to define the space. For sofas placed against a wall, the front legs on the rug is enough. A good rule of thumb: when seated, your feet should rest on the rug and side tables should have at least one leg on it.

BEDROOM

In the bedroom, the rug should extend at least 60 cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed — enough to feel underfoot when you step out in the morning. For a king or queen bed, a 200x300 cm rug is usually the right starting point. If you prefer a smaller size, two runners placed on either side of the bed work just as well.

DINING ROOM

The rug should extend at least 70 cm beyond the table's edges on all sides — enough to keep the chairs on it even when pulled back. A good way to measure is to add 140 cm to both the length and width of your table. This ensures there's always enough surface underfoot, whether you're seated or moving around the table.
